Paraguay is a landlocked country. The transport to Paraguay is basically possible via three ways:
- by sea route with connecting inland waterway transport (also known as Barge)
The main ports of transhipment are Montevideo in Uruguay and Buenos Aires in Argentina. From there, the transportation takes place to Paraguay with inland vessel via Río de la Plata and subsequently via Río Paraná up to South – South-eastern Paraguay along the Argentinean border or via Río Paraguay up to Asunción along the West-border of Argentina.
- by sea route with connecting land transport
Here it depends on the seaport that is selected. A Brazilian port, which is regularly selected for the connecting land transport to Paraguay, is the port of Paranaguá. It is preferred as the route is short and the transit route to Paraguay is available. Paraguay has a free port there, which is much-frequented, not only for the transport to Paraguay but also for the export out of Paraguay. Agricultural products, like soya and corn, are mostly transhipped. Land transport from Montevideo or Buenos Aires is not common as it is disadvantageous in terms of price in comparison to the inland waterway transport.
- by air freight, whereby there are no direct overseas flights to Asunción.
The transhipment of the air freight for Paraguay takes place according to the route and origin of the goods in countries like Chile, Brazil, and Argentina. The transport to Paraguay via air freight is currently relatively costly. For a long time, the development of an airport with a focus on cargo is being discussed. However, the commencement of construction has always been delayed.
In order to organise the economical transport to Paraguay with low-risk, extensive knowledge is required:
- in the field of logistics
the multimodal transport (Container Transport) requires fair buying rate for the cost-effective structuring of the final price for the customers and reliable partners (shipping companies, railway undertaking, hauliers and inland navigation vessels company ), so that the performance chain functions smoothly at the interfaces.
- in the area of Documentation
For issuing and processing the documents, the country-specific standards of the authorities, especially the customs office, specific features associated with the transit by inland navigation vessel and truck and the continuously changing terms of the Paraguayan import requirements should be considered to avoid additional charges due to waiting period at the port, cost of new issuance of freight documents and general delay.
