Information and worth knowing
Infrastructure, logistics and freight forwarding Germany
Germany has become Europe’s most important logistics centre, partly due to its central geographical location, but mainly due to factors such as quality and reliability.
A number of recent studies underline the quality of Germany’s infrastructure. In the World Competitiveness Yearbook, Germany’s reliable infrastructure is highlighted as one of the 5 highest-ranking key indicators of business attractiveness.
The World Economic Forum’s Global Competitiveness Report gives high marks to the quality of Germany’s roads and airports, rail and port infrastructure, and the country’s excellent communications and energy infrastructure.
Companies benefit from the superb logistics infrastructure in Germany: the German logistics network includes not only the Port of Hamburg, the third largest container port in Europe, but also the ports of Bremerhaven, of which the „Auto Terminal“ is one of the world’s largest ports for vehicle transport, and the Duisburg-Ruhrort ports, which are considered the largest inland port in the world.
The World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index (LPI) 2018, which measures the logistics performance of 160 countries, ranked Germany’s logistics performance and infrastructure as the best in the world:
Rank: Logistics performance and infrastructure quality (2018) | Rank: Logistics Performance Index | Rank: Quality of infrastructure |
---|---|---|
Germany | 1 | 1 |
Japan | 5 | 2 |
Netherlands | 6 | 4 |
Singapore | 7 | 6 |
UK (Great Britain) | 9 | 8 |
France | 16 | 12 |
Spain | 17 | 19 |
Czech Republic | 22 | 26 |
China | 26 | 20 |
Poland | 28 | 35 |

Dense waterway, rail, air transport and road network
Together with more than 250 other inland ports, Germany’s port infrastructure enables the efficient supply of goods in Europe’s largest market.
The Rhine and the Elbe serve as the main arteries for inland waterway traffic in Germany: from the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland, via Duisburg, Cologne, Hamburg and Bremen, to the deep-water ports in the river deltas along the north and north-west coasts, Emden, Bremerhaven and Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
Germany has a dense network of airports, 12 of which are classified as international airports.
Frankfurt, for example, is Europe’s largest airport in terms of cargo volume and ranks sixth in terms of passenger volume.
The motorway network also has one of the highest kilometre densities in Europe. The network of roads and motorways has a total length of 625,000 km.
The 38,400 km of train lines are almost enough to circumnavigate the globe and the network of high-speed railways with speeds of up to 300 km/h is the fourth largest in the world.
