Shipment to Paraguay

Paraguay is a landlocked country. The shipment to Paraguay is basically possible via three ways:
- by sea route with connecting inland waterway shipment (also known as Barge)
The main ports of transhipment are Montevideo in Uruguay and Buenos Aires in Argentina. From there, the shipment to Paraguay takes place with inland vessel via Río de la Plata and subsequently via Río Paraná up to South – South-eastern Paraguay along the Argentinean border or via Río Paraguay up to Asunción along the West-border of Argentina.
- by sea route with connecting land transport
Here it depends on the seaport that is selected. A Brazilian port, which is regularly selected for the connecting land shipment to Paraguay, is the port of Paranaguá. It is preferred as the route is short and the transit route to Paraguay is available. Paraguay has a free port there, which is much-frequented, not only for the shipment to Paraguay but also for the export out of Paraguay. Agricultural products, like soya and corn, are mostly transhipped. Land transport from Montevideo or Buenos Aires is not common as it is disadvantageous in terms of price in comparison to the inland waterway transport.
- by air freight, whereby there are no direct overseas flights to Asunción.
The transhipment of the air freight for Paraguay takes place according to the route and origin of the goods in countries like Chile, Brazil, and Argentina. The shipment to Paraguay via air freight is currently relatively costly. For a long time, the development of an airport with a focus on cargo is being discussed. However, the commencement of construction has always been delayed.
