Paella, fiestas and flamenco
Lush forests, inhospitable deserts, debauched beaches: Spain is a country with many facets. Located in the southwest of Europe, the spanish peninsula forms together with Portugal the so-called Iberian Peninsula, which is almost completely surrounded by sea and ocean.
The two island groups of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic and the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean also belong to Spain. In addition, there are the two autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla in the north of Africa.
Visitors are particularly enthusiastic about the extraordinary landscapes: Worldwide, it is the country with the most UNESCO biosphere reserves – from the wetlands of the Tablas de Daimiel National Park to the high mountain landscapes of the Picos de Europa National Park.
The Iberian Peninsula is named after the Iberians who settled there in early and prehistoric times. The name “Hispania”, on the other hand, comes from the Phoenicians. Between 200 and 400, the Romans occupied the south, west and north of the Iberian Peninsula. Their legacy can still be felt today: Spanish is a roman language that developed from Latin. It was also the romans who brought christianity to Spain, which still shapes society in many places today.
From 800 onwards, it was finally the moors who ruled the country – an influence that is still reflected in the language and architecture of Spain today.
Certain things are so inextricably linked with Spain that they are symbolic of the country’s entire culture. These include, for example, Andalusian flamenco, which is made up of dance, song and instrumental music.
