Moving – Crate / Liftvan / Volumes up to 12 cbm
For a smaller overseas move up to 12 cubic meters, shipping via liftvan is recommended. These wooden crates, also called crates or sea chests, offer a good alternative to the conventional 20-foot containers when only a small amount of household items needs to be transported.
Standardized overseas liftvans made of solid wood are available in sizes of 5.8 and 11.6 cubic meters (outer dimensions). However, it is also possible to have individualized crates made according to individual needs for example to safely ship motorcycles.
Composition of Liftvans
As a rule, liftvans are made of seawater-proof solid or glued plywood and offer the advantage that they can be shipped worldwide cost-effectively. By sending the partial loads LCL (“less than container load”) in the overseas crates, the transport can be carried out as consolidated cargo and thus minimize costs.
Volume of Liftvans:
A standard overseas crate type 1 (205 cuft) can accommodate up to 40 moving boxes. The following inside dimensions are given in millimeters and in the order of length, width, and height:
L: 2190mm x W: 1090mm x H: 2030mm
So liftvans can hold a volume of 4.85 cbm. If a larger volume is required, additional liftvans can be used.

Smaller Crates
With a required interior volume of 2.16 cbm or less, we recommend a liftvan of the type ¼ (92 cuft). The inside dimensions are 1160mm x 1040mm x 1790mm.
Customized Crates
Furthermore, there are special customizations for sofas, motorcycles and machines as needed. The crate must be calculated exactly – to be able to load all moving goods accurately into a wooden box. These then come with others as consolidated freight in a large overseas container. The hold of a collective container is rented by the respective seaport forwarder (collection service provider) to different loaders. This allows the costs to be distributed to individual parties.
